Packers' Contract Extension Raises Questions

Published September 25, 2026 · Updated September 25, 2026 · NBC Sports

The Green Bay Packers extended coach Matt LaFleur and GM Brian Gutekunst contracts following their 2025 playoff appearance, despite blowing a 21-3 halftime lead against the Bears.

After CEO Ed Policy took over, it was clear 2025 would be an up-or-out season for LaFleur and Gutekunst. Policy expressed dislike for lame-duck arrangements, indicating both would either be extended or fired after the season. capturengo.com

Despite the Packers' wild-card exit, management extended both contracts, complicating any potential firing decisions this year. The move raises questions about the timing of the extensions given Policy's stated preference against coaches with expiring deals.
