The Indian Premier league has just concluded but Kolkata is gearing up for another tournament — The Bengal Pro T20 league that is set to take place from June 5 to 21. Preparations have begun in full swing across the various grounds in Bengal and the teams are all looking forward to this platform that gives them an opportunity to showcase their talent.
The tagline for this year is “Ebar Jombe Khela” which translates to “now the game will get exciting” and much like the IPL, Eden Gardens is already decked up with banners and posters, featuring the faces of the star players who will be playing in the league.
There are two windows for the matches every day, one starts at 1 pm and the other at 7 pm. The men’s matches are set to be held at the iconic Eden Gardens Stadium while the women’s games will be played at the Jadavpur University Salt Lake campus cricket ground. Eight teams, both in men’s and women’s categories, have come up with certain prominent personalities also taking part in them.
Mukesh Kumar, who recently represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL, will be seen as the captain of Sobisco Smashers Malda. Adamas Howrah Warriors will be led by Bengal cricketer, Sakir Habib Gandhi. Lux Shyam Kolkata Tigers will be led by Abhishek Porel who also represents Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Other than that, Lucknow Super Giants all-rounder, Shahbaz Ahmed will captain Shrachi Rhar Tigers. Anustup Majumdar is the captain of Rashmi Mednipore Wizards. Sudip Gharami will be leading Novus Royals Purulia and Indian pace bowling stalwart, Mohammad Shami will also feature in this league as the skipper of Servotech Siliguri Strikers.
The women’s league will have known, faces like Dhara Gujjar, who has represented the Mumbai Indians franchise in the Women’s Premier League and Saika Ishaque who also plays for MI will be seen representing Sobisco Smashers Malda.
The star attraction is immense which has led to considerable excitement and buzz around the same league. However, this platform provided by the Cricket Association of Bengal is a huge opportunity for the newcomers to make their presence felt.
Men and women, sitting at the remotest corners of the city have started to dream big. They have picked up their kit bags and set out in hope of seeing themselves in the Indian Jersey some day. Tournaments like these might not attract as many eyeballs as the IPL or WPL, But, TRP is not the factor here. It is for these young aspiring cricketers to get the adequate exposure, make the best use of the golden chance given to them and come on the radar of team selectors, while definitely enjoying at the same time.
The men’s matches will be telecast on Star Sports and Jio Star while the women’s games will be shown on No.10 sports platform — so all the more opportunity to be noticed and make a mark in front of thousands of people watching them.
