Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has joined a special celebration organised by the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport to honour around 850 underprivileged children who received free heart surgeries through the initiative called ‘Gift of Life’.

The event took place at the Rotary Service Centre in Juhu, Mumbai, to celebrate the success of the project that has helped to save hundreds of young lives through ltheir critical medical treatment.

Speaking at the event, Gavaskar praised the brave children and everyone involved in the initiative. “Meeting these brave children was truly moving,” said the batting maestro. “Their courage, and the selfless work being done by the hospital and Rotary Club, is inspirational. These are the real heroes. It’s heartening to see how many lives can be changed with timely action and generosity.”

The project was led by PP Nitin Mehta, the chairman of the initiative. He has raised almost Rs 12 crore over the past six years to support children born with congenital heart defects. The project is valued for Rs 3.5 crore and it aims to provide life-saving treatment and medical support to almost 250 children. The initiative is also supported by several Rotary organisations and the international partners.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Mehta said: “Every child deserves a healthy heart and a chance to live their dreams. Through the Gift of Life project, we are trying to ensure that no child is denied treatment because of financial hardship. When we see these children smile after surgery, we know we have helped give them a future.”
