DRS June 8: Shubman Gill gets BCCI’s command, why no Jasprit Bumrah & did Iyer take a dig?

Shubman Gill told to focus on…..

Despite scoring 732 runs in IPL 2026, Shubman Gill has once again been left out of India’s T20I plans. The selectors have reportedly asked the India captain to focus on the bigger picture: the World Test Championship and the 2027 ODI World Cup. With nine Tests and around 35 ODIs scheduled before the World Cup, the BCCI is keen to avoid burnout and ensure Gill remains fit for the two major ICC events. While his T20I future remains open ahead of the 2028 World Cup, it isn’t an immediate priority since we already have Abhishek, Samson and Sooryavanshi. Read more here.

Shreyas Iyer’s message as India captain

Shreyas Iyer has made it clear that becoming India’s new T20I captain will not change who he is. Speaking after his appointment as skipper for the Ireland and England tours and the Asian Games, Iyer said he has no intention of copying anyone or leading under someone else’s influence. Instead, he wants to remain authentic and trust the approach that has brought him this far. The appointment caps off a remarkable comeback for Iyer, who had been out of India’s T20I setup since 2023. Strong performances in domestic cricket and another productive IPL season, coupled with his impressive leadership record in the IPL, convinced selectors to hand him the role. Read more here.

Why no Jasprit Bumrah?

Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned Jasprit Bumrah’s limited availability in T20I cricket, suggesting the star pacer could have been India’s captain had he committed to playing more regularly. With Suryakumar Yadav removed as skipper, Manjrekar felt Bumrah was a natural candidate given his leadership qualities and stature within the team. However, the BCCI has chosen to rest Bumrah from the Ireland and England T20I tours as part of a workload-management plan focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup and the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. While Bumrah will feature at the Asian Games later this year, concerns over fitness and workload appear to have ruled him out of a full-time leadership role for now. Read more here.

IND vs AFG Day 2 – As it happened

After a batting-friendly opening day, the Mullanpur pitch offered far more assistance to bowlers on Day 2 as 10 wickets fell for 310 runs. India added 196 runs to their overnight score before declaring at 564/8, with Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar making contributions. Afghanistan pacer Mohammad Saleem Safi starred with a six-wicket haul, using reverse swing effectively. In reply, India’s bowlers took control. Debutant Manav Suthar impressed immediately, claiming three wickets with sharp turn, while Prasidh Krishna chipped in with two. Afghanistan struggled against the spin and pace combination, ending the day deep in trouble and still trailing India by 451 runs.

England’s opening Test win over New Zealand has reignited the debate around “Bazball”, but this time there are signs the team is finally showing greater maturity. After criticism for their reckless batting against India and Australia over the last year, England appeared far more adaptable at Lord’s. Batters were willing to leave deliveries, tighten their defence and respect difficult conditions instead of attacking every ball. Head coach Brendon McCullum praised the team’s ability to adjust to a bowler-friendly pitch, where England’s scores of 140 and 226 proved enough for a 115-run win. The performance suggested England are moving away from blind aggression and embracing a more balanced approach, something Michael Vaughan had previously described as “Bazball with brains.”

Harmanpreet Kaur shuts down reporter’s retirement question in MS Dhoni style before T20 World Cup

India women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur gave a befitting reply to a reporter who asked her if the T20 World Cup 2026 will be her last. The star was a part of the Captains’ Carnival that was held in London on Sunday ahead of the marquee event which will commence from June 12 onwards. Kaur, who led India to their historic ODI World Cup victory, smilingly snapped at a reporter, in what one could call a typical MS Dhoni type of response.

Kaur flays reporter in MS Dhoni style

At the Captains’ Carnival on Sunday, a reporter asked Harmanpreet if this World Cup will be her last. 37-year-old immediately asked why, and then followed it up with another stinging response. She then completely shut down the reporter by asking why this question was even raised if he thought that she shouldn’t stop playing.

Reporter: “Is this going to be your last World Cup?”
Harmanpreet: “Why?”

Reporter: Just checking.
Harmanpreet: Do you think I should stop?
Reporter: Not at all.
Harmanpreet: Then why are you asking this question?

Following the conclusion of the ODI World Cup last year, there was a buzz around Harmanpreet bringing the curtains down on her career as she had led India to the coveted trophy. However, the 37-year-old categorically maintained that she wishes to continue playing for the country across formats of the game and has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Harmanpreet made her ODI and T20I debuts way back in 2009, and is currently the oldest active player in the Indian team. She has amassed over 4000 runs in both the formats and has been a pillar for the India women’s cricket team.

Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland is a Norwegian soccer player who plays as a striker for Manchester City in England and for Norway’s national team. He started his pro career at Bryne and Molde, then moved to Red Bull Salzburg in 2019, where he won the Austrian league and cup.

In his first season, City won the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup – the treble. Haaland set the record for most Premier League goals in a season (36) and most goals by any Premier League player in all competitions in one season (52).

He won the Premier League Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe, and the Gerd Müller Trophy. He was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year and IFFHS World’s Best Player, and came second in the Ballon d’Or.

Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Erling Haaland

World Record Holder at Five Years Old

Haaland’s athletic talent showed up very early. At just five years old, he set a world record for the longest standing long jump by a child his age, leaping 1.63 metres. International Age Records still recognises this feat today. A champion from the start.

Teenage Rapper Named ‘Flow Kingz’

Long before Manchester City, Haaland was spitting rhymes. He was part of a rap trio called “Flow Kingz” with two other Norwegian youth footballers. Their music video for “Kygo jo” has over 9 million YouTube views. Haaland handled the “big verse” and once dreamed of becoming a professional rapper. A striker who could have been on stage.

Celebration Is a Lotus Meditation Pose

After scoring, Haaland sits on the pitch with legs crossed, hands on knees, eyes closed. That’s the ‘Lotus’ meditation pose. He openly practises Buddhist meditation, which he says helps him relax, avoid stress, and focus before and after games.

Dreams of Becoming a Farmer After Retirement

Growing up in the small farming town of Bryne, Haaland developed a love for animals and land. He has publicly said he wants to own a small farm with a couple of goats after football. He already stops at local farms to pick up fresh ingredients like raw milk.

Tapes His Mouth Shut for Better Sleep

Haaland is obsessed with optimising his performance. He tapes his mouth shut at night to force nose breathing, which he believes gives deeper, more restful sleep. He also wears orange-tinted blue-light-blocking glasses for three hours before bed. A strange habit, but if it works for a goal machine, who are we to judge?

His Father Wanted Him to Be a Golfer

Despite Alf-Inge Haaland’s own football career, he had a different dream for his son. He wanted Erling to become a professional golfer. From ages 10 to 13, young Haaland was forced to play golf every week, hoping he would develop a swing for that sport instead. Football almost lost him to the fairways.

Scored Nine Goals in One U-20 World Cup Match

At just 18, Haaland announced himself in explosive fashion. Playing for Norway at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he scored NINE goals in a single match against Honduras. Norway won 12-0, and his incredible haul remains a tournament record. Nine goals. One game. A teenager. Unreal.

Was Eligible to Play for England

Haaland is the face of Norwegian football, but he could have led England’s attack instead. He was born in Leeds on July 21, 2000, while his father played for Leeds United. That made him eligible for England. He chose Norway – his parents’ country – but what if?

Follows a Salt-Free Cristiano Ronaldo Diet

To maintain his powerful physique, Haaland follows a highly disciplined diet mirroring Cristiano Ronaldo’s. His father confirmed he eats the same food as the Portuguese superstar – fish, chicken, and pasta – but absolutely no salt. A strict plan for a machine built to score.

Wakes Up to the Champions League Anthem

For most players, the Champions League anthem is pre-match inspiration. For Haaland, it’s his alarm clock. He uses the iconic anthem as his morning wake-up call, saying, “It’s the last song I’m tired of” and it helps him “always get a perfect start to the day.”
