U-17 AFCON: Algeria sink South Africa to top Group D
South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat against Algeria in the second match of the U-17 AFCON pencilled in Morocco.

Amajimbos clashed with Algeria, searching for their second win in a row after collecting maximum points in the opening match of the AFCON tournament, having defeated Senegal 2-1 on Thursday.
South Africa dominated the ball possession in the opening minutes of the game; however, they were wasteful in the final third.
On the other hand, Algeria was posing a huge threat to Vela Khumalo’s side on-set pieces as they have players who possessed impressive aerial prowess.
SOUTH AFRICA SUFFER SETBACK IN THE U-17 AFCON
The North Africans broke the deadlock from a dead-ball situation in the 41st minute after Yacine Abed headed home a pinpoint cross from a corner kick.
The solitary goal gave Algeria the all-important lead heading into the tunnel at the interval, leaving South Africa with all to do in the second stanza.
With South Africa pushing for an equaliser in the second half, they won a free-kick on the edge of the penalty box, but they couldn’t convert after Mpho Molepo’s curling shot was parried away by the goalkeeper.
Mamelodi Sundowns startlet, Molepo, continued to be a live wire for Amajimbos in attack as they searched for a goal to level matters; however, Algeria added another goal in the dying minutes to claim a 2-0 win.
RIP | Scotland great Scott Hastings dies aged 61
Scotland great Scott Hastings has died at the age of 61 after suffering from cancer, the Scottish Rugby Union announced on Sunday.
He won 65 caps for Scotland, playing 51 internationals with his fullback brother, Gavin, and was also selected for the British and Irish Lions tours of Australia in 1989 and New Zealand in 1993.
Diagnosed with cancer
Following his retirement as a player in 1999, Scott Hastings enjoyed a successful career as a rugby broadcaster.
In 2022 Hastings revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer, receiving treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which could not be cured.
He was also known for his charity work in aid of mental health, motor neurone disease, several other causes.
Deteriorated quickly
His children announced that Hastings had died in in an Edinburgh hospital.
“Corey and Kerry-Anne Hastings are saddened to inform you that Scott, the Scotland and British & Irish Lions centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on the morning of Sunday, 17 May,” said a Scottish Rugby Union statement.
“This also marked his late wife Jenny’s birthday which speaks louder than words that he is safe and with his beloved Jenny. Scott was undergoing cancer treatment and due to complications deteriorated extremely quickly.”
The statement added: “Despite every effort by the incredible team at the Western General Hospital ICU (intensive care unit), he passed away peacefully and pain free.
“At this time the family ask everyone to give them space to process and manage their energies and ask for their privacy to be respected.”
Scottish Rugby extended its heartfelt sympathies to Corey, Kerry-Anne, and Scott’s wider family, led by brothers Graeme, Gavin and Ewan and all his many friends.
The flag will fly at half-mast at Murrayfield Stadium in tribute to one of Scotland’s finest sons.
Details of the funeral service will be shared once finalised.

Les jeunes Verts ont réalisé une précieuse victoire face à l’Afrique du Sud (2 – 0) ce dimanche à Rabat lors de la 2e journée de la Coupe d’Afrique des nations (CAN) – Maroc 2026, grâce à un doublé du Paciste Yacine Abed. Un succès qui les rapprochent d’une qualification aux quarts de finale et surtout pour le Mondial !
La sélection algérienne U-17 s’est distinguée cet après-midi sur l’un des terrains du Complexe Mohamed IV, à Rabat, en battant l’Afrique du Sud (2 – 0) lors de la deuxième journée de la Coupe d’Afrique des nations (CAN) – Maroc 2026.
C’est grâce à un doublé de l’académicien du Paradou AC, Yacine Abed avec un but par mi-temps (41e et 85e) que les poulains d’Amine Ghimouz ont fait le travail face à une sélection sud-africaine redoutée, notamment après sa victoire lors de la première journée face au Sénégal (2 – 1).
Le Sénégal qui affrontera le Ghana en fin d’après-midi et qui sera l’adversaire des cadets algériens lors de la 3e et dernière journée.
Avec ce succès, l’Algérie compte quatre points après son nul face au Ghana (2 – 2), occupant seule la tête du classement du groupe D, en attendant le résultat du match Ghana – Sénégal, et prend une bonne option pour un passage aux quarts de finale, significatif d’une qualification pour la Coupe du monde de la FIFA – Qatar 2026, prévue en novembre et décembre de cette année.
