Seydouba Cissé: Guinean international trades Leganés for Saudi challenge

Guinea international midfielder Seydouba Cissé is poised to finalise a new contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Kholood, marking a significant shift in his professional career.

The 25-year-old’s current commitment with Spanish Segunda División (Liga 2) club CD Leganés is set to expire at the end of June, and he has officially reached an agreement to join the top-tier Saudi Arabian club as a free agent.

Seydouba Cissé has earned 25 caps for Guinea

Cissé has reportedly committed to a three-year tenure with Al-Kholood Club, signalling a fresh challenge for the Guinean powerhouse. This move will see the midfielder experience the burgeoning Saudi championship for the first time following a lengthy and formative stint in Spanish football.

A graduate of the FC Atouga academy in Guinea, Cissé has dedicated the vast majority of his professional development to the Leganés youth system in Spain. After moving through the ranks, he earned a permanent promotion to the senior squad in 2022. Since making his debut for the first team, he has featured in 33 matches, contributing three goals and providing two assists.

Currently, Leganés finds itself positioned 17th in the Liga 2 standings, having secured 42 points from 39 fixtures with only three matches remaining before the conclusion of the domestic season.

Known for his robust and hard-tackling style in the centre of the park, Cissé has also become a mainstay for the Syli National. Having progressed through the national U-17 and U-23 setups, he has now accumulated 25 senior appearances for Guinea, scoring twice during his international tenure.

Al Hilal shift focus to CAF qualification after emotional return to Sudan

Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman have returned home after a successful campaign in Rwanda, where they were crowned BK Pro League champions, achieving a significant sporting milestone during one of the most challenging periods in Sudan’s recent history.

The Blue Wave showcased resilience and determination throughout their stay in Rwanda, giving their supporters moments of joy and pride despite the difficult circumstances affecting the country back home.

Attention Turns to CAF Champions League Qualification

With the league triumph now behind them, Al Hilal have quickly shifted focus toward another major objective — securing qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.

The club is set to compete in a decisive mini-league tournament that will determine the teams representing Sudan on the continental stage next season, as they continue their pursuit of African football despite the enormous obstacles surrounding the club and the nation.

For Al Hilal, continental participation carries importance beyond football, symbolising hope, resilience and national pride for many Sudanese supporters.

Emotional Visit to Hilal Stadium

However, the team’s return to Sudan also carried deep emotional significance away from football celebrations.
Players, together with members of the technical staff, visited Hilal Stadium to witness firsthand the current condition of their historic home ground following the destruction caused by the ongoing unrest in Sudan.

The visit turned into an emotional moment for many associated with the club as they came face to face with the devastating impact the conflict has had on one of Africa’s once-admired football venues.

A Painful Reminder of Sudan’s Crisis

Large sections of the stadium now stand heavily damaged, with visible destruction serving as a painful reminder of the prolonged crisis that has deeply affected communities, infrastructure and daily life across Sudan.

For decades, Hilal Stadium represented far more than a football arena. It symbolised unity, passion and the rich culture of Sudanese football while hosting unforgettable continental nights, fierce rivalries and celebrations that united thousands of supporters.

Today, the condition of the stadium reflects the hardships the country continues to endure. Despite the heartbreaking scenes, Al Hilal’s recent success in Rwanda has provided a glimmer of hope and resilience for Sudanese football fans.
The club continues to carry the spirit of Sudan onto the international stage, offering moments of inspiration and pride during an incredibly difficult period for the nation.

While stadiums can eventually be rebuilt and football activities restored, the emotional and human cost of the conflict remains impossible to ignore.

Al Hilal’s homecoming ultimately became more than simply returning after winning a league title. It became a powerful reflection of both the resilience of sport and the pain a nation continues to endure.

As the club now prepares for the CAF qualification mini-league, the journey ahead combines football ambition with the hope for recovery, stability and brighter days for Sudan.

SA Rugby spends R281m on Springboks

SA Rugby spent a quarter of its total income directly on the Springboks, Springbok Women, Springboks Sevens, Junior Boks and other national teams in 2025.

According to the Annual Financial Statements, SA Rugby’s group revenues increased by 29% from R1.5bn in 2024 to R2bn in 2025, with R500m spent directly on the Springboks (R281m) and the High-Performance Department (R221m) into which all other national teams fall.

Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, noted that the investment had borne immediate on-field dividends with the Springboks’ continued success mirrored by other national teams.

Lots to celebrate for Springboks, SA Rugby and national teams

The Blitzboks won the HSBC SVNS World Championship in 2025 (and have extended that success into 2026), while the Junior Springboks won the U20 world title for the first time in 13 years in 2025, and claimed the SANZAAR U20 Rugby Championship title for the first time on Saturday.

It was also a breakthrough year for the Springbok Women as they reached the play-off stages of the Rugby World Cup for the first time and broke into the world’s top ten.

“Those achievements were a significant product of the newly formed High-Performance Department, whose R221m expenditure included the costs of the high-performance centre in Stellenbosch and an expanded playing programme for national teams,” SA Rugby said in a statement.

“Another R195m was spent on national team players (and referees) – to secure their image rights for commercial purposes – as well as to insure them against injury. Direct investment into the 15 member unions saw R400m spent on the playing of the game in the form of distributions to members.

“The increased revenues were in part fuelled by record sponsorship revenues, leaping by 51% from R488m to R739m (following a commercial reset) to exceed broadcast revenues of R678m for the first time.

Revenues were also boosted by a change in the Test match hosting model, through which SA Rugby took ownership and delivery of Springbok matches. It yielded R402m in revenues with a direct match day cost of delivery of R213m.

There was also a double-digit growth year-on-year in licensing with the increase in merchandise sales, through the opening of two Springbok stores and market appetite, continuing to drive resurgent royalty revenue to R78m.”

Ups and downs

Despite the jump in revenues, SA Rugby still ended the year reporting a pre-taxation loss for the group of R40m highlighting the ongoing challenges towards long term solvency and sustainability; challenges reported in the annual financial statements by all unions in the world. The need for a reserve fund or some investment fund is still relevant and will stay critical in the modern era of sport and rugby.

Despite the loss, the accounts received an unqualified audit based on a detailed management solvency assessment and action plan.

The accounts were presented to members at the Annual Meeting in Cape Town.
